Navy submariner now a lieutenant
Barret Schlegelmilch of Hilo, a 2007 graduate of St. Joseph High School, recently was promoted to lieutenant in the U.S. Navy.
The naval officer currently is serving on board the USS Seawolf, where he qualified in submarines, and is a nuclear power engineer. He recently returned from a deployment under the polar ice cap during which his ship surfaced through the ice at the North Pole.
Schlegelmilch is the son of retired Navy Capt. Charles and retired Lt. Cmdr. Annette Schlegelmilch of Hilo.
Two complete combat training
Army Pfc. Fresno James G. Eder and Air Force Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Matthew W. Gasparine-Young graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
During the nine weeks of training, the soldier and guardsman studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values. They also received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, military justice system and basic first aid.
Eder is the son of Tina G. Eder of Pahala and the brother of Nathaniel G. Eder. The soldier graduated in 2006 from Ka‘u High and Pahala Elementary School and earned an associate’s degree in 2009 from Hilo Community College.
Gasparine-Young is the brother of Jason Silva of Hilo and is a 2009 graduate of Kalaheo High School in Kailua, Oahu.
